The load securement on Vehicle 1 [the 2005 Kenworth TK 900 Semi Tractor driven by Jesse Vannoy] failed, causing large, metal pipes to travel over the concrete barrier wall and into the Westbound lanes of traffic. One metal pipe struck the drivers side rear quarter panel and window of vehicle 2, then landed on top of vehicle 3. Vehicle 4 [the 2011 Ford F250 SuperDuty driven by Robert Torrey] was unable to stop and struck the rear of vehicle 3, forcing vehicle 3 to rotate counterclockwise and strike the outside concrete bridge rail. Vehicle 5 [the 1996 Chevy 1500 Pickup driven by Jeffery Munz] struck another metal pipe with its front end, forcing vehicle 5 to travel to the inside lane and then back across the outside lane and become disabled. Vehicle 6 [the 2008 Toyota Camry driven by Bruce Bowers] struck a metal pipe and became disabled in the inside lane. Vehicle 7 [the 2019 Freightliner Semi Tractor driven by Timothy Hess]s front end was struck by a metal pipe as it traveled across the Westbound lanes. One of the metal pipes that was struck traveled into a KDOT guardrail, destroying a section of it. Due to the severity of the collision with the pipe, Driver 3 [Brooke N Rees] was pronounced deceased at the scene.
